I was privileged to grow up with three grandparents. My maternal grandmother a rebel who refused to go into ‘service’ and was assistant manager of the 1940’s version of the local supermarket. My dad’s mum loved to read. Both great examples to me as a little girl.
My children had all four grandparents for two decades. Blessed with their patience and time to listen, read and draw with them. As my dad moves into the end of his life, I’m proud of how they are supporting him with reassurance and compassion. I hope to be able to use the elder wisdom you have shared with me Donna to guide him to a conscious and wise end of life in human form. 🙏
Thank you Sarah. What a gift that/if we get the chance to parent our parents as they once did us. He held you as you entered the world and you will 'hold' him as he leaves. Just beautiful. I know you have all you need for this. Lucky him. Lucky you. Loving you xxx
I loved this conversation so much. I visualised you both sitting on rocking chairs mulling over these questions. Beautiful. What a gift you both are. Thank you ♥️🙏🏾
haha I love the thought of me and J in rocking chairs side by side. Im sure he would manage to even make that look cool. So glad you enjoyed it. Me too xx
A thought provoking and inspiring way to start the long weekend. And Jordan is right, Donna, as I’ve said before, you are an elder, not one in training, although of course learning never ends. Enjoy your weekend 😀
Thank you Nicola. So glad you enjoyed it. I am working on the African model which is viewing the age of 60 as the point where I will fully 'complete' my elder training. I hope to be ready by then to carry and honour the full title. I appreciate your words. Biggest Love xx
Wonderful discussion. Very thought provoking. I really enjoyed listening to the music.. being 68 doesn’t matter 😂. Absolutely loved hearing your voice Donna on the two tracks and the things you said. Jordan is an amazing young man. Thank you both for this. 🙏🏻❤️
Thanks Yvonne. Listen to the whole Rizzle Kicks album. Its excellent. Jordan is a genius. I know he won't like that, but he is. Ive also thought of him as a modern day prophet. xx
A passage from a chapter I read directly after reading your beautiful post. “Each of us contains our ancestors and all the generations to come. When we free ourselves, we are freeing all humanity”. -Paulo Coelho, The Witch of Portobello.
It’s funny how the world will reinforce a message.
Brilliant read. Loved it. I only knew one Nan but she was a real rock to me growing up. She died when I was 18 - and I remember feeling like I had completely lost my safety blanket. I haven’t ‘really’ thought about her in a long time - but I will now, with immense gratitude and love. Thank you both 🙏❤️
Thank you, thank you, thank you both. Same vision Corinne! So much to ponder on by the fire with a cup of something warming…….. What an awesome exchange ❤️❤️
I really enjoyed reading both of your wise & down to earth words. I also downloaded your book Jordan which I already know I’m going to love listening to. Such a great topic. I was grateful that my dad decided to share about his parents who died before I was born. It was a random (not really of course) 4 hour’s straight storytelling which was so enlightening of how my dad lived his life & some of the intergenerational transfers that I knew of & didn’t know details.
Hi Lina! Long time. Hope you're well my love. So glad you got to share that experience with your dad. Helps us put the pieces of our spiritual puzzle together....like finding the missing corners underneath the dusty sofa! Hope to see you soon my beautiful blue mermaid. Loving you always xx
Yes- exactly that. The spiritual puzzle & the dusty sofa! I’m doing REALLY well thanks. Missing you too. Hope to see you soon! I’ll definitely come on a silent walk if there’s one when I’m not at work 💚 Until then I’ll wink at you as the sun rays beam through the 🌊 water & I’m swooshing through the waves or gazing up at tall trees & bountiful bluebell woods 🤩 Wow
What a fascinating conversation. Lots to think about and lots I’m given pause to think about in my own parenting. Just listened to ‘Star’, beautiful song 🩷
I have just read this after going to my parents 50th wedding anniversary party, where my great aunt (who is 90) brought an envelope stuffed with photos that she had gathered over the years and we passed them around the 4 generations of family who were there. Truly incredible to be able to share those memories and experiences in that way!
Her mum was my great nan, who I had in my life until I was 8 or 9 and who I visited most weekends, when also visiting my maternal and paternal grandparents (who all lived on the same estate). My paternal grandparents had weekly visits from my children - their great grandchildren - too. I feel immensely privileged to have experienced my grandparents (and their siblings!) as key caregivers in my life, and that my (now adult) kids have experienced this in their own lives. There’s so much knowledge and wisdom and heritage that our elders share - and also, there’s so much still to learn, as those antique photos revealed!
how beautiful Emma...such a gift for you all. I love what Stephen Jenkinson says about it being our duty to 'carry our ancestors' in how we choose to live. Big love xx
Thank you both for this thought provoking piece.
