At the beginning of our lives in human form, we arrive into the world through a hole. A portal. In a natural birthing process, the time is right for us to be born when we can no longer experience further growth within the womb. We therefore begin our transition from womb to world by travelling down the birth canal, wriggling and pushing ourselves forward, until we land in to a bright, noisy, and rather alien world. No wonder most of us cry on entry! It’s always a struggle to be born though, to leave the comfort and safety of our blissful sanctuary and move through, and out of that first portal. And even if we arrive ‘through the sunroof’, it’s still a shock, and a kind of portal, just with a slightly different access point.
Portals are defined in the dictionary as ‘doorways, entrances, or gateways’. The human journey is full of them, and after our first birth portal experience, we will encounter many more throughout our life time, (even if we are not aware of them for what they are). Portals often open up during times of great distress or transition, whereby we are invited by the Universe to move on to the next stage of our human and spiritual evolution. Some examples might include the portals of heartbreak, parenthood, illness, death and dying, menopause (aka the ‘menoportal’), and working through phases 1, 2 and 3 (yes there is a third phase…deeper still!). Basically every major life transition involves us crawling through a portal alone in the dark, on our hands and knees, until we land in to the next phase of our Soul’s journey.
As we get hurt and experience loss throughout our life time, (which is a necessary part of the human experience), we will eventually come to see that our wounds themselves are also portals. We have a choice to either crawl through them consciously with humility, or we will pretty much fall into them regardless, kicking and screaming as we go down, down down. Either way, all of us will be called to move through our wound portals at some point.
It’s called healing.
