Out of balance

Like many unfathered women, my masculine and feminine energy is out of balance. Growing up without any kind of father figure in my life has meant that I have overdeveloped my masculine side. No doubt partly as a coping strategy for the lack of protection, guidance and emotional support a father should provide for his child. As an adult this has led to me over relying on traditionally masculine traits like strength, independence and control, which all stem from a need to protect and provide for myself in the way my dad couldn’t.

A big part of my inner work has therefore been about redressing this imbalance. Reclaiming my feminine energy, and allowing my inner warrior to take a step back. This, like most things in my life, is a work in progress. Now I’m no expert in this field, but I’m assuming that most of us know that we carry both masculine and feminine energy, regardless of our gender.

Masculine energy tends to be more action oriented, with a focus on planning, problem solving, achievements and goal setting. The healthy masculine carries qualities that include the provider, protector, strength and leadership. Whereas feminine energy tends to be more about intuition and connection, with a focus on relationships, emotional resonance and flow. The healthy feminine includes the qualities of nurture, compassion, creativity and empathy. When people are out of balance with too much feminine energy, they can feel emotionally overwhelmed and ungrounded, insecure and lacking in direction and clarity.

As all of us have been birthed into a patriarchal world, so many of us have an over developed masculine, not just the unfathered amongst us. With some men focusing too heavily on their physical and intellectual strength, knowledge and egoic achievements, at the cost of their emotional freedom, vulnerability and heart based communication. For women working in traditionally male dominated environments, they can internalise the patriarchy and unconsciously deny or reject their more feminine energy within the workplace and beyond, which can come at a huge cost.
